3D Printed Drone for The British Navy

One of the most requests we get at our 3D printing service bureau is ‘Can you print a drone?’ It seems if everyone wants one these days. We can’t understand the fascination but each to their own I guess. Drones in every shape and size can be found floating about in the 3D printing community and we’ve 3D printed a few at our 3D printing service bureau but a new application for them is being developed as military assets.

This blog focuses on how only last week, we saw how the British navy 3D printed and assembled a drone on a warship in open waters. It seems that the Navy is considering incorporating 3D printed drones into the warship arsenal for flying e missions in emergency situations. I guess all they need to do is design it, 3D Quick Printing will 3D print it at our 3D printing service bureau and then courier it on a next day delivery to a port of their request.

These 3D printed drones are part of an ongoing project by researchers at the Naval School to investigate exactly what modern communication and fabrication technologies can do for sailors out on a mission.

This particular drone passed its first maiden flight without a hitch. It was 3D printed using ABS plastic and a sparse fill pattern to provide a good weight and strength combination. If you’ve got a drone or anything else that you want 3D printing. All we need from you to quote is your .stl files and we’ll provide a quote normally within an hour.

Just to remind you all that at our 3D printing bureau service we only use Professional Stratasys 3D printers that use FDM technology. We have two machines. One is a Dimension Elite 3D printer has a build envelope of 204 x 204 x 305mm and the other is also a Dimension machine that has a bigger build envelope of 254 x 254 x 305mm. These are considered to be mid-range as far as build envelopes go.
