Cutting Parts To Fit In The Build Envelope

More often than not when we receive enquiries from our growing customer base at our 3D printing service bureau, generally speaking the parts fit into the build envelope of our 3D printers

The Dimension Elite FDM 3D printer has a build envelope of 200 x 200 x 300mm and the Objet 30 3D printer that uses Polyjet technology has a build envelope of 300 x 200 x 150mm. These are considered to be mid range as far as build envelopes go. Other 3D printing services have only the maker or hobbyist machines with a small 150 x 150 x 150mm build envelope and other service bureaus (who have been around slightly longer than us) have machines that can print parts that are 3D printed in machines with a 900 x 600 x 900mm envelope. We’ll have a machine like that in the future no doubt at our 3D printing bureau but for now we’re be successful and busy with our Objet 30 and Dimension Elite.

But……. every now and then we get an enquiry at our 3D printing bureau service from a company that produces very big stuff indeed. On the odd occasion we’ll ask them if it’s OK to scale the part and in some instances that’s fine with them but this one particular enquiry we received a few weeks ago the part was needed at 1:1 scale.

The image below shows the full part (like a cuckoo in a sparrows nest) that is obviously too big for our Dimension Elite machine.

So, we all sat down in the office over a pot of coffee and decided that the best way to do this job, rather than farm it out to another 3D printing bureau service that may well have the capacity to 3D print a job of this size was to cut it up into a number of separate sections. Our Sales and Marketing manager visited the customer and told him of our dilemma. The customer was very accommodating in acknowledging that we do not have the capacity at our 3D printing bureau and was willing to give us the responsibility to cut the part up into sections and 3D print it using our FDM 3D printer.

The images in the gallery below show a selection of the 9 separate parts that were 3D printed at our 3D printing service bureau that was fully assembled and delivered to our customer.

As you can see from the images above, it just shows you how big the finished component actually was.
